Feeling nostalgic?
Back in 1998, getting your hands on a game demo was half the fun. There was no digital storefront to browse and no broadband to make downloading a 30MB file painless. For most people, demos arrived the same way news about games did: on the cover discs taped to the front of computer and gaming magazines, which were still the main line of communication between the industry and gamers. If you were lucky, your favorite mag would bundle the latest playable taster, and you'd be racing before you'd even finished reading the review.
Motorhead shipped in separate software and 3D-accelerated flavors, and each of those came with or without the intro videos (remember, on a dial-up connection those intros were often larger than the actual game demo). Demo 1 dropped you into a one-lap time attack around Goldbridge in the Kobra X3, while Demo 2 upgraded that to a proper three-lap race against AI opponents. Later on, a dedicated multiplayer demo let you take Neocity online through the MPlayer service, offering a genuine taste of what made Motorhead special.
We've hoarded every one of these demos we could track down, in all their software, 3dfx and multiplayer variety. Whether you want to relive the exact download that hooked you a quarter of a century ago, or you're just curious how the game was first served up to the world, grab one below and fire it up.
